Gorbio, France is a perched medieval village, high-up above Menton, in the southeastern corner of the Côte d’Azur. This picturesque village seems to be perched atop a quiet little secret, hence it seems to be forgotten by tourists.

As with other historic perched villages, Gorbio has an impressive view, meters high above the Mediterranean. Exploring Best Perched Villages in the South of France, Saint Paul de Vence Alpes-Maritimes - Duration: Bluette Matthey 9 views. Great Bookviews.

35 km from Nice, Bonson is a perched village typical of the Nice hinterland. Although in the 11th century a fortified chateau stood where today's cemetery has been built, not all the traces of the past have disappeared.

There are no hotels in the. The Greeks, the Romans, the barbarians of the North, and the Moors have all left their traces in its villages, from the Luberon to the Alpes-Maritimes. It is in such smaller communities that the true Provencal spirit can be found: in brilliant sunlight falling across the tightly grouped terra-cotta roofs, or in the shade beneath great plane Reviews: Answer 21 of Hello all, my hubby and I will be in Nice beginning to mid July for 2 weeks, this is our 2nd trip to the area, so we would like to explore villages a bit more.

We will not have a car, so will take either a bus or a train. I need an advice to which. Book your visit. Peillon is one of several perched villages in the Alpes-Maritimes department, just a few kilometres north of Monaco and the Cote d'Azur but at almost metres altitude.

It is in a startling location, on top of a cliff and with higher mountains rising behind the village, and one of the most attractive villages to be found in. Coaraze is a small 'perched village' in the hills north of Nice, in the Alpes-Maritimes department of Provence, south-east ally classified as one of the 'most beautiful villages in France', Coaraze is in a lovely setting running up the side of a hill with mountains rising dramatically behind the village.

Because of its sheltered position and its remarkable number of sunny days. The Alpes-Maritimes department in south-east France, including the world famous Côte d’Azur, is home to several hundred medieval hill villages, fortified towns and ruined iron age camps, too many to list, so here I’m sharing my choice of 13 of the best hill villages near Nice.

A couple of years ago an English version of The Most Beautiful Villages Of France was published and if you are at all interested in this subject I would highly recommend the book. Almost every one of these villages has a “Office de Tourisme” and they usually sell the books there, though the English version is a bit harder to come by.

Franck Charel/Atout France. In the west of Provence, Les Baux is one of the best known of the hilltop villages. It’s in the Alpilles range of hills, 15 kms ( miles) northeast of the Roman city of château, now ruined, stands at the end of the main street, its grounds housing a collection of medieval siege weapons giving an idea of the struggles from the 11 th century onwards.

Eze is easily the most dramatic of the medieval hilltop towns. Perched a dizzying feet above the Mediterranean between Cap d'Ail and Cap Ferrat, Eze looks precariously balanced on its rocky eagle's nest. Eze Village is the higher part, whereas Eze-Sur-Mer is down on the coast. Gourdon is fairly typical of the pretty 'perched villages' of Provence, with it's well preserved stone houses, gift shops, art galleries and local crafts on sale.

Pottery, perfumes and glassware shops make for interesting gift and souvenir shopping. We spent 3 nights in Tourettes-sur-Loup, and it was definitely our favorite stop in Provence. The walled village, perched on a precipitous cliff, plunging down to the river Loup, was a maze of narrow streets and charming shops and restaurants.

It wasn't touristy, like many of the other medieval villages we stopped in during our trip TripAdvisor reviews. In their book "The Templar Revelation," Lynn Picknett and Clive Prince mention It is one of sixteen villages grouped together by the Métropole Nice Côte d'Azur tourist department as the Route des Villages Perchés (Route of Perched Villages).

This Alpes-Maritimes geographical article is a stub. One of 16 perched villages in the Alpes-Maritimes, Eze delivers a fabulous view from the “eagle’s nest,” a vertical drop to the sea. Today, the town has very few permanent residents, but plenty of visitors making it more of a village-musée (living museum).

The best time to visit Eze is in the spring, before the holiday crowds. The village of Bonson, perched on the hillside and seen from the Var valley.
